Police Committee
CHARTER
Scope
The Town of Waterford – Police Committee exists to provide the community with formal, active participation in the ongoing development and effectiveness of the Waterford Police Department (WPD).
The Committee operates in consultative and advisory capacities focused on strengthening and optimizing working relationships within the WPD, and between the WPD, the Town Board, and the greater Waterford community.
The Committee performs the on-going, constructive work required to provide the Town Board with input needed to ensure a well-run, high performing WPD.
Objectives
The Town of Waterford – Police Committee is chartered to achieve the following objectives:
- Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of the Wisconsin state statutes pertinent to Town law enforcement.
- Develop and document effective policies and processes used to conduct Police Committee work
- Act as an advocate for Town residents on matters pertaining to law enforcement services
- Efficiently act on assignments from the Town Board regarding WPD matters
- Perform due diligence, document, and deliver value-based recommendations on the following:
- Hiring, promotion, and disciplinary actions for WPD leadership, officers, and staff
- The Town of Waterford’s collective bargaining agreement with the Town of Waterford Police Association
- The Town of Waterford’s contract with the Village of Waterford for policing services
- Evaluate ongoing effectiveness of the WPD and make recommendations to the Town Board on potential changes
- Effectively research relevant Wisconsin state statutes and ordinances from other municipalities as input to proposed changes to the WPD
- Prepare data-driven materials summarizing proposed changes to the WPD for discussion and possible action by the Town Board
- Present formal recommendations of proposed WPD changes to the Town Board for discussion and possible action
- Provide the Town Board with regular reports on Committee activities and accomplishments
